BELIEVE IN THE UNSEEN

 BELIEVE IN THE UNSEEN

GOOD MORNING BOYS

I BELIEVE IN THE EXISTENCE OF WIND. Do you? I have never seen the wind. Have you? And yet, I believe the wind exists. Not only that, I believe that the wind is an awesome thing.

Why should this be? I know that some very weighty and academic studies and explanations of the wind have probably been written through the ages. But none of these are the reason I believe that the wind exists. The only reason I believe the wind exists is that I have experienced the wind and its effects. Simple. Full stop. I have experienced it.

I have stood on top of a mountain and felt my body fight with gravity as the wind nearly lifted me up. I have felt the rain hit my face so hard that it hurt me, because the wind blew it so hard. I have heard the roof tiles on my house groan as the wind pulled at them.

It was my experience of the wind that taught me to believe that the wind exists. Books, research, the word of other people all help verify my belief. But at its core it is down to a personal experience.
I believe in God for the very same reason: I have had  had a personal experience of God. I have had this personal experience of God in so many ways in my life: in the love of my family and friends, in the stillness of my prayer life and the sacraments, in the wonderful world of nature.

But in the absence of a personal experience of God these are only words, books and rules. They will not live.

What will live in the lives of people are lived experiences. God is made present in the world in many ways. St. Teresa of Avila says that ‘Christ has no body now but yours’. This means that we are often called to be the presence (experience and effect ) of God in the world.

Reflection Questions
1. Where do you experience God personally in your life?
2. What difference does it/ would it make to your life?
3. How would you act differently in light of this?
